The Controversy Over Cord Blood Collection

There's a lot controversy surrounding the collection of storage of umbilical cord blood, the human blood can be collected from the placenta and umbilical cord after it has been detached from a newborn baby. Some of the public believe that the collection of cord blood is a self-generating market that weighs on the desperate hopes of people and that the likely use of cord blood is minimal compared against the cost of collection and storage.

But others believe that private cord blood banks and cord blood storage businesses are filling a need that can't be fulfilled by the public or by non-profit organizations, as existing cord blood storage facilities cannot keep up with the demand.

It is a ethical gray area that people continue to argue over because while one side thinks that the public is being exploited by being asked to pay for cord blood storing and collection, while the other side strongly believes that cord blood and stem cell research holds great promise for transplants and donor services.

While the ethical battle goes on, cord blood banking still continues to be a viable medical process, and there is still great promise in the future of stem cell research and the possible cures it can provide.
